A NEWSLETTER FOR HAMLIN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL COMMUNITY

Principal's Message

We had a great first week of school! We are so happy to have all of our huskies back on campus. Students in all grade levels spent time doing get to know you activities, learning the rules and procedures of the school, as well as jumping right in to their grade level content. Our car rider lines and busses have been a challenge. However, I want to thank you all for being patient as we work to get everyone in their cars safely and students home.

Also, congratulations to everyone! Hamlin was the number one school according to the State FAST exam in the district. I am so proud of the staff and students! We could not obtain this honor without your partnership.

For anyone that is new to our school, this weekly newsletter goes out each Sunday. These newsletters allow me to share the great things taking place in our classrooms and I am sure you will not want to miss seeing pictures of your child having fun and learning at school!

Please follow these Car Line procedures:
  • Please display car tag ( and make sure grade level is updated)
  • If car tag is not displayed, driver will be asked to report to the office with proof of identification for release of student
  • Advance forward whenever possible and do NOT leave space in between cars. Please pull all the way up in the front of the school during arrival and dismissal. We are trying to load/unload as many students as possible.
  • Practice with your child how to open their own door and shut the car door. We are not able to open every door all the time. Parents Do NOT get out of the car while in the car line.
  • Refrain from cell phone use while driving on campus
  • Please do not drop off students in the left lanes as this poses a safety hazard.
  • Please do not drop off students in the parking lot and have them cross to enter the building as this also poses a safety hazard.
  • Careful attention to car pick-up procedures will ensure safety for everyone

As a reminder, please make sure to submit all of your child’s first-day paperwork that has come home, as well as the forms on Skyward. We appreciate your assistance in making sure that these forms are returned promptly.

Students will begin using academic programs to support instruction. Students will use Lexia (K-2) and Reading Plus (3-5) for reading. Both programs align with the B.E.S.T. Standards (Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking). Stay tuned for more information regarding these programs.

Finally, please remember that Wednesdays are early release and school ends at 2:00 PM.

Thanks again for your continued support and I look forward to another wonderful year!

Best Regards,

Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) has developed the Code to help students, parents/guardians, and school personnel understand the guidelines for maintaining a safe and orderly learning environment. The Code shall be discussed with students, school advisory committees, and parent/teacher associations at the beginning of each school year and quarterly thereafter and for transferring students upon their enrollment.

An electronic copy of the Code can be found online at the District website, on the OCPS app, or on OCPS school-issued devices.

Media Center Updates

Welcome Back! I’m Mrs. Hohman, the media specialist, and I can’t wait to work with your students this year. Students should have received their devices last week. Please continue to remind your child about the importance of taking care of their device. If your child experiences any issues with the device, please report it immediately to their classroom teacher.

Skyward Parent Portal

The Skyward Parent Portal allows families to see the Online Consent Forms, Gradebook, Emergency Contact information and more.

Families can review the Parent Consent Forms through Skyward this year listed under Online Forms. Please read through all 5 forms to be completed and submitted. Two of the forms (model release and student records) ask for permission for students to have classroom photos and yearbook photos taken of them to be shared in the school yearbook.

The Skyward Parent Portal can be found here:

School Devices checked out to students during the first week

Kindergarten and First-grade students will work with iPads in the classroom. Second grade will have a laptop for classroom use only.  The default device use model for students in grades 3-5 is in class. At the end of the school day, devices must be stored in carts or travel home with students only when an activity or homework requires technology access at home. With this new model, all chargers will be installed into the charging carts and chargers will be unable to be taken home.   If you have a returning student, they will receive the same device they used the past school year.

Digital Device Care Tips to review with students

At school, we will discuss how to take care of devices. Please review with your child the following device care tips, it will help our school minimize device fines.

  • Hold/Carry the device with both hands.
  • Be gentle when handling your device.
  • Never bend the laptop screen back too far.
  • Never poke the screen with a pencil.
  • Never yank headphones or chargers from the device. Hold onto the prong and gently pull out of the device port.
  • Do not eat or drink near your device.
  • Keep your device in the center of your desk/table to avoid the device from falling off the desk.
  • Keep your device off the floor.
  • If a key pops off, do not throw it away. School staff might be able to reattach.
  • Do not put anything into a port that does not belong.

Counseling Corner

Hello Husky Family! To all our new families: a big, warm welcome to Hamlin! And to our returning families: Welcome back! I hope the summer break was filled with fun, rest & lots of family time. My Name is Ms. Boireau (boy-row) and I am delighted to serve as your school counselor this school year. This will be my 10th year in the profession and my 3rd as a Husky! My main goal is to ensure every student has the tools to manage their emotions effectively!

As your school counselor, I'll be working closely with parents, teachers, and itinerant staff to meet the needs of our students primarily through small-group counseling. This year, in addition to my role as a counselor, I'll also be serving as your 504 coordinator, providing support to students in another way. Whatever concerns you may have; our mental health team is here and ready to help. If you have any questions, you may contact me at ernestine.boireau@ocps.net.

I look forward to meeting and working alongside you this school year!
